Tohoku Disaster Relief

Since 2011, TechSojelnposf_02up APAC partner Japan NPO Center (JNPOC) has been focused on Tohoku (area severely affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami) disaster relief support and development, promoting citizen-led support for disaster relief.

JNPOC has established multiple disaster relief funds/programs, including their fund, Japan Earthquake Local NPO Support Fund, in partnership with major corporations such as Takeda Pharmaceutical, Daiwa Securities, Japan Tobacco and Shinkin Central Bank.

JNPOC has also co-developed multiple disaster relief funds and programs for the Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami with various corporations such as Takeda Pharmaceutical, Nissan and Johnson & Johnson with different thematic focus like the maintenance of livelihood, children and community empowerment in the affected areas, as well as with nonprofits like World Vision Japan, which resulted in a series of mentorship workshops for civic group leaders and NPOs of Tohoku for their capacity building.

Digital Strategies for Development Summit

Hosted by TechSoup partner ASSIST in Manila in Oct. 2014, the Digital Summit for Development Strategies brought together 400 Delegates and 55 speakers and thought-leaders to connect and share innovative, tech-related solutions addressing challenges in five main areas:

  • Youth, Education and Employment
  • Governance
  • Disaster Management and Climate Change
  • Health
  • and Social Innovation and Enterprises.

Key event highlights included:

  • Technology 4 Good panel stressed how important it is to prioritize the spread of digital literacy, to practice resource mapping, and most of all, to develop and nurture partnerships to allow the practice of using technology for good to flourish.
  • Breakout Sessions showcasing innovative solutions – over 20 unique projects presented, including: Sparkbiz.ph which helps facilitate collaborations between local government units and investors; PeaceTech, a program that capitalizes on communication technology to bridge the youth of varying cultures; and KidCAMP, an application which can help teachers to tailor their own games and programs, fit for children with Autism.

Beyond being a venue for sharing and connecting, the summit also served as the launching ground for a 3-year technology lab program. AsianNGO

Initiated by ASSIST Asia, AsianNGO is the prime source of information on grants and funding opportunities, learning tools and knowledge resources, partnerships, news, events and policy updates in the development sector across Asia. Beside this comprehensive online platform AsianNGO features a magazine dedicated to the latest trends, news and opportunities from the developmental world. It includes articles, interviews and insights from the leading thinkers and makers in development as well as in-depth analyses for civil society, enterprises, policymakers and the academe.

Vietnamcauses.org

The Lin Center created Vietnamcauses.org to facilitate two-way information sharing among the philanthropic community and local nonprofit initiatives they support. The VietnamCauses online mobile platform invites Vietnam nonprofits to post their organizational information and ask for needed support, while prospective donors and volunteers can use the site to search for a local nonprofit by name, cause and location and access information that can help them to make an informed giving decision.

VietICT NPOs and Volunteers Connection Day

TechSoup’s Vietnam partner, Vietnet-ICT, hosted the NPOs and Volunteers Connection Day in Saigon. Serving as a venue for the youth of Vietnam to find meaningful opportunities to make an impact, this one-day conference was attended by over 400 youths and 25 different NGOs, and featured a variety of technology training and capacity building workshops that facilitated opportunities to connect and collaborate with one another.
